Matteawan Gallery is pleased to announce our 2018 Winter Artist Residency with Ori Alon. For the fifth installment of the Winter Artist Residency, Beacon artist Ori Alon will present White Men Registry, a project that explores race, gender, and current political issues. Starting Saturday, January 6, Alon will be working in the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6 pm and during the week by chance or appointment. There will be a closing reception on Sunday, January 28 with an artist talk at 3:00 pm. Each year Matteawan Gallery takes a break from its regular programming for the month of January and invites an artist to work on a specific project in the gallery. The goal of the Winter Residency is to give artists a space to create a new body of work or to continue working on an ongoing project in a new environment. The Residency focuses on work that has a social, performative, or participatory component. The past four Winter Residency projects were Zachary Skinner, Geo Co Lab (2017), Jean-Marc Superville Sovak, I Draw & You Talk (2016), Mollie McKinley, Cabin Fever (2015), and Angelika Rhinnhofer, a priori, (2014). Ori Alon is the founder of the Center for Supportive Bureaucracy (Empowering Clerks Network). The ECN produces licenses, permits, and certificates including a Forgiver’s License (Class A&B), Joy Permits, Refurbished Report Cards, Open Carry permits for musical instruments, the OK Parent Award, the Village Fool Diploma, a Racism Release Form, and more, which will be available free of charge to gallery visitors. This January Alon will facilitate a special program of the New York Diversity Authority at Matteawan Gallery. Everyone is welcome to participate in the White Men Registry (WMR-752), which allows visitors to quantify, observe and have compassion for the suffering and prejudices of white men in Dutchess County, NY. Visitors who are not white men and wish to show solidarity are encouraged to express their feelings by becoming allies to white men in their exciting journeys through life's hardships. Empowering Clerks Network founder Ori Alon is an artist, writer, and teacher. He leads art classes and events in various communities and institutions. Besides serving as the ECN Executive Empowering Clerk, Alon creates a comics series with postage stamps and writes The Magic Bagel children's book series.
